IGCSE

What is Cambridge's IGCSE?

The abbreviation IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Very similar to GCSE, the IGCSE’s curriculum is designed to cater to international students who wish to take a Cambridge UK curriculum.

The IGCSE certifies students to further pursue university-level grades like 11th and 12th either in A-levels or the IB diploma. The IGCSE is available in many different countries worldwide and mainly caters to children of expats who live there for work or business.

The IGCSE curriculum is taught at top international schools in Kuala Lumpur and is considered as one of the most robust curricula for high schoolers which are recognized and accepted worldwide.

What is GCSE?

GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education and is taken up mostly by students from the UK after their 11 years of compulsory education in school. GCSE is also available in some international schools in some countries.

However, IGCSE is predominantly used as the standard Cambridge curriculum in most international schools.

What are the Differences Between IGCSE and GCSE?

Though both the IGCSE and the GCSE are very similar in terms of qualification for high school students and are accepted all over the world, there are a few subtle differences that may help you figure out and choose what deems fit for you.

The GCSE course curriculum caters to local UK students and international students whereas the IGCSE is clearly designed for international students who do not speak English as a first language.

Differences Between Cambridge’s IGCSE and GCSE Curriculum

Course Curriculum

The IGCSE international curriculum is designed specifically for international students and is tailored to the needs of children who are non-native English users.

Though the subjects are quite the same, in the GCSE curriculum there may be a few topics and lessons that can be a little more intense, especially in the English language subject. Certain subjects like history and geography which fall under Humanities may include different topics as compared to that of IGCSE.

Availability of the Curriculum

The GCSE is mostly available in a few countries apart from the UK itself. However, the IGCSE is available in more than 150 countries worldwide in top international and private schools.

In terms of flexibility, IGCSE has an upper hand as it can be pursued anywhere in the world due to its wide range of availability.

Exam Dates

The annual GCSE exams are conducted in the month of May- June and the students can sit for a re-exam in the month of November.

In the IGCSE, the exams are to be sat in May-June for the majority of subjects and also in November for a few other subjects. This can be advantageous as students get some extra time to prepare for their particular subjects.

Subjects Offered

Though the subjects offered in both IGCSE and GCSE are the same, GCSE has a few more options to choose from with subjects like dance, astronomy, electronics, statistics, etc. Having said that, IGCSE subjects are tailored to the needs of international students specifically.

Distance Studies

IGCSE can be a better option when a student is opting for distance learning. This is due to the fact that a GCSE curriculum includes a lot of practical coursework which can be a challenge to students who take up distance learning methods in GCSE.

Should I Choose IGCSE or GCSE?

If you have an option of choosing any of these two subjects, there really isn’t much difference, as they are both internationally accepted curricula and are framed with the same kind of course curriculum.

However, if you feel that your parents may have transferable jobs which may lead to you changing schools more often, you can opt for the IGCSE as it is available in most countries abroad.
