There is no one student who does not want to be successful, especially in school life. Successful students are not born smart or intelligent, they are more disciplined,  focused, and have winning study habits.

Most students consider themselves less smart because they take some time to grasp concepts or don’t perform up to expectations. For them, smart students mean those who do not have to do anything to secure good grades, because they are born smart and talented.

Grades are part of your education, it doesn’t define you. In order to be successful, you need to do more than just securing good grades.

So this article is by Kuala Lumpur International School for all those students who do not consider themselves smart. We want to tell you that you are already smart and can be successful by just being more focused and disciplined.

Here I have collated the tips which can help you to be successful in school and in life.

These tips can be used by any students who want to be successful in school and who are preparing for International Scholarships.

Follow Daily Study Session

Students who do well in Kuala Lumpur International School follow consistent routines or habits of the focused study sessions. They do not wait for last-minute preparations or exams for studying. They make sure they perform their task each and every day without procrastination. They are more disciplined in their approach and do not wait for motivation. They take initiative to take time and complete their task each day (whatever it can be, related to study)without fail.

Tips:-

● Start your study from the beginning of the year; even when there are no exams as it will create a habit that will help you later.

● Try to dedicate 1 hour daily for study; if you find it difficult, start with 15 minutes and gradually increase the time as you feel comfortable.

Review

By the end of the day, try to review all that you have learnt that day (it can be anything; different topics, new concepts etc). Reviewing each day will help you retain information.

It won’t take much of your time, but it’s necessary to ensure that you cover them on the same day.

Tips:-

● Create a summary of each day in a book or in an excel sheet (the topics you have covered) to track down your progress. This will help you in the long run but make sure it is in an organised clean manner.

● Research suggests that if you study new topics or concepts and then sleep, you remember the information better; so try to briefly review things before sleeping.

Practice Writing

Research suggests that when you write, you command your brain to process information in a more detailed way, which helps to successfully load that information into your memory.

So write everything you have learnt (if you hate writing in detail, try to write important points)

Tips:-

● Write notes of important points of chapters

● Write a daily schedule or to-do list

● Write a weekly or monthly planner

● Write your study or school-related goals

Habit of writing can be beneficial while applying for International Scholarships as you need to write essays to convey to others why you deserve scholarships.

Remove distractions from your life

As per Kuala Lumpur International School, If you want to be successful in school stay away from distractions; as they are major culprits in your life that can do harm to your academic performance.

It’s not easy but with willpower, you can fight off all the distractions that surround you. Here are some distractions that you need to eliminate:-

● Turn off notifications/alerts on your phone

● Delete all the apps from your phone that are not necessary.

● Do not keep your phone near while studying

● Stay away from friends that distract you from studying

Tips:-

● If you have a habit of checking your phone again and again, then you can keep a long password to unlock your phone, this will  discourage your habit.

Refrain from multitasking

When you are multitasking, you’re actually just switching between tasks which reduces productivity.

● Work on one thing at a time

● If you are reading or doing projects on a laptop or computer screen do not try to open many tabs; open one tab at a time.

Change your Mindset

Research has proven that accomplishing things is possible with the right mindset. So believe in yourself  and make sure to repeat affirmations, it can be anything related to your study or goals but it has to be in presentence.

For eg:-

● I am smart and Intelligent

● I am doing great in my studies

● I am accomplishing my daily task

● I am improving each and every day

These may seem ineffective to you now, but repeating these affirmations will do wonders as it fits into your subconscious mind and you act accordingly.

Kuala Lumpur International School believes traits can be developed over time but it starts with the right mindset.

Tips:-

● Do not use negative words for yourself

● Don't compare others with yourself

● Even if something looks difficult now, repeating positive things; that you can do it, or you are already doing it, can help you to accomplish it.

For eg:- Divide your 1 hour study time in 4 section of 15 minutes  (it can be done continuously by adding breaks in between or you can prefer to divide as per your preferred time slot (15 minutes each in morning, afternoon, evening and night)

This tip will improve your attention span over time and it will lead to effective study sessions.

Tips:-

● During exams you need to study continuously so you can take breaks in between.

● for eg:- for 1 hour of study give yourself 10 or 15 minutes break and  then start to study again.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise will keep you healthy and active which will directly enhance your concentration.

Tips:-

● Do 20 to 30 minutes of exercise, 3-4 times a week.

● Develop good posture as it improves mood and also enhances memory.

Be organised

Students who are organised do not end up wasting precious time looking for items or notes at the last-minute.

● Being organised does not take much effort, just place everything in a neat clean manner such as create a book for notes and write in a neat handwriting.

● Set reminders for study time.

● Clear your desk and place everything properly

● Do not dump all the information into one book, create separate books or folders.
